Why is it important to effectively deal with upset customers?
Fact: 68% of customers will stop service as a result of rude, indifferent or discourteous service. (according to Rebecca L. Morgan, author of the book "Calming Upset Customers.")
Fact: Hostile people will call not because they are mad at you personally, but for a variety of other reasons. (ie. Their expectations have not been met regarding the service, they are already upset by someone/something else, they are frustrated, they feel they can manipulate you if they make a lot of noise or they are embarrassed at not being able to do something.)
Fact: You can't control a caller's behavior but you can change your behavior to avoid causing any more annoyance to the member.

Tips on handling difficult callers
Tone: People respond more to how you say something than what you say. If your voice is annoyed, impatient or condescending, the caller will become angrier. Raising the tone of your voice at the end of a sentence implies a question, not confidence. When your voice sounds assured, they will believe you know what you are talking about and will be easier to calm. It may also help to deepen your telephone voice. Lower voices are perceived as being more mature, confident, and in control.
Speed: Talk slowly, otherwise you will lose your listener and they will become frustrated.
Smile: When you smile, endorphins are released that make you feel better and calmer. The quality and tone of your voice improve when you smile. (advice from Jim Delande)
Breathe: Take a deep breath to calm yourself. When you're upset you lose objectivity. It is important to be calm if you're going to find a solution. (advice from Neovi Vrotsos)
Interrupting: This may induce more anger in an already upset caller. Interrupt with caution by prefacing it with, "I hate to interrupt, but...," or "Pardon me for interrupting.
Empathize: Showing that you understand how they feel, or why they feel that way is important. Empathy is a powerful tool in deflecting a caller's anger. (ie. "I understand your problem," or " can appreciate your frustration.") Always follow empathy with action. (ie. "I don't blame you for being angry...let me see how I can fix this.")
Avoid debate: Avoid causing defensiveness of any sort. Listen to the caller while they blow off steam and then take action.
Take control of the call: It is important to stay in control of the call. Remember that the anger is not directed at you personally, and you may be able to deflect much of its impact by staying calm.
It's nothing personal: The caller is not upset with you, they don't even know you!
Take time out: If you find yourself becoming upset, allow yourself a little time away from the situation. This will give you a chance to calm down before you return. (ie. "Let me check on this, please hold for a minute," or "I need to consult with a (supervisor/colleague), just one moment.") After a particularly difficult call, take a few minutes to collect and relax. Don't go into the next call feeling upset.
End on a high note: Always thank them for calling. The more positive you end the call, the better the member will feel about what took place.

Q: What should I do when a hysterical member calls?
A: Empathize, state that you want to help, probe for more information, repeat the concern to make sure they understand, ask what they'd like to have happen, summarize actions, let them know you value them as a customer and end pleasantly.
Q: What if the member is ranting and not giving me a chance to explain or ask questions?
A: Use his/her name at the beginning of your sentence. Most people listen when they hear their name. (ie. Mr./Mrs. Jones)
Q: What if a caller is cursing at me?
A: Do not curse back. Compose yourself as best you can and avoid responding to abuse. It shows strength, not weakness, to stay calm in that circumstance.

Snagit allows you to create your own templates. It can be useful when you want to add screenshots to a common design quickly. For example, if you are using a custom mock-up, you can recreate it in Snagit so that you can use it whenever you like. Snagit also makes it easy to add annotations and other graphics to your screenshots. This way, you can customize your designs to suit your individual needs without having to recreate them from scratch each time.
This is just another way that I utilize a tool that I have open already.
Here's the basic Steps
Here are the steps that I took to get the "drop zone" which gives me the effect of having my own template.
Create a new image via the Command N.
Using the Shape tool, create the desired shape that you want to use.
Once completed, right-click on the shape and select "drop zone" - which is at the bottom of the right-click menu.
Save the design as a snagz file so that when you double-click on it from the Finder, it will open in Snagit. Your Drop Zone will remain active.
Works Great!
This is a great way to create a custom template that works for graphic needs. I like this because its quick and easy and I get the power of Snagit when I need it. Its easy to apply Blur, arrows or anything else that I may need to touch up an image.
Note: If you wish to apply Effect Styles to a screenshot being applied to a drop zone, you should do so first before adding it to the template. This is because the Effect Styles need to be applied to the original screenshot, as the drop zone will only render the screenshot as a static image. Applying the Effect Styles after adding the screenshot to the drop zone will not have any effect on the image.
Recently we tried to go to Uncle Chungs, as that's our go-to place for Chinese, but they were closed. We did a quick search and decided to try Sichuan Gourmet across the street as they offer gluten-free Chinese.

Four Things We Learned
They said that they could make any dish gluten-free. We asked for Sweet and Sour Chicken and boneless spare ribs as that is what my daughter usually orders. The waitress told us that the kitchen could make the dish using corn-based flour and it would be gluten-free.
When the dish came out, it looked very good. In fact, it looked too good to be gluten-free. The adults at the table took a bit and confirmed - as best as we could - that it was made with corn-based flour. The dish did look different than other fried foods that we ordered - General Tso's Chicken and Sesame Chicken. My daughter decided to try it out.
I thought the Sweet and Sour Chicken was good, but my daughter didn't like it. She didn't have the same comfort feeling that she has when she orders from Uncle Chungs. She had a few bits but ate most of the boneless ribs and vegetable fried rice.
She did complain about her stomach later that night - usually a sign that she had gluten. It didn't hurt that bad, which leads me to believe that there was potential cross-contamination. I am thinking that they probably don't have a dedicated gluten-free fryer for their Sweet and Sour Chicken.

Despite the fact that I enjoyed my General Tso's Chicken, we are unlikely to return because we believe that it was not a safe place for my daughter to eat. Today I took a trip to Falmouth, Maine from Framingham, Massachusetts. This road trip took 2 hr 12 min (134.8A mi) via I-95 N. I-95 is the main interstate highway that runs along the East Coast, connecting many major cities and towns. The trip from Framingham to Falmouth was a relatively quick drive since I-95 N is a direct route.
In order to record the journey, I used my GoPro Hero 9 camera. In order to power the GoPro for this leg of the trip, I connected it to a USB power brick, but I could have easily used the GoPro battery. The power brick allowed me to continuously record without having to worry about the battery dying.
The final timelapse was doubled in speed with the help of Final Cut Pro. By speeding up the footage, it helps compress the duration of the video, allowing for a longer video to be shown in a shorter amount of time. It also helps to give the video a more cinematic feel.
During the journey, I stopped at the first rest stop in Maine. I edited out that stop. The rest stop didn't add to the overall narrative of the journey and I wanted the video to be more concise. I felt that having the stop in the video would make it too long and detract from the story I wanted to tell.

You should know something about keyframes to get the most out of the animation feature. See the information below about the general use of keyframes.
Sometimes when i export an image as a GIF it doesn't animate. I am not sure why this is the case. You should double-check to make sure that GIF images work when you export. (Test the file in the Finder.)
Videos can have a transparent background, which will have an interesting effect on Final Cut Pro imports.

OpenDoc was introduced by Apple in the 1990s as a way of providing a standard for document-centric applications. OpenDoc was designed to be a platform-independent, component-based system for generating, editing, and exchanging documents. Developers were able to create small, reusable components that could be combined into complex documents.
OpenDoc's cross-application component integration was one of its key features. A component created by one application could be used inside another, leading to a much more flexible and powerful document work experience. A spreadsheet created in one application could, for example, be embedded within a word processing document, and the two would be linked so that changes to the spreadsheet would reflect in the document and vice versa.

At the local church's RCIA series last week, I gave a lecture on the "Life in Christ". This was the last formal lecture that I would be giving to the candidates for the RCIA program in the local church. I was tasked with helping the candidates understand how to live a life of faith in Christ. I discussed how to remain focused on God, how to serve our neighbor, and how to live a life of virtue and grace.
In previous years, when I gave the lecture, I would use material from the "Making Disciples" book instead of the United States Catholic Catechisms for Adults book. This is the first time I have given a lecture using the United States Catholic Catechisms for Adults book. I felt that the material in the United States Catholic Catechisms for Adults book was more up-to-date and comprehensive and would be more beneficial for students. I also wanted to introduce them to the updated version of the catechism so they could become more familiar with it.
Similarly to what I've done with previous brochures, I've included my instructor notes, as well as classroom handouts, in order for teachers to prepare for their classes as well as students who wish to learn more about the subject.

SmartMockup is a really cool application and make it really easy to create markups from any do particular designs. itaEUR(tm)s a very nice application to have for those times when you need a quick mockup.
My experience with SmartMockup has been really good, as it makes it really easy for you to create markups from designs you have in mind. The macOS app seems to be out-of-date since, every time I open the application, I get a 403 Forbidden HTTP error message.
The last time I wrote about SmartMockup was back in August of 2017. I thought it would be a good time to do a follow-up post on it. It appears that the software has not been updated since 2019, which could explain why the 403 Forbidden error message is appearing when I try to open the application. This could be an indication that the developers have stopped supporting the software and it has become outdated.
SmartMockup App in 2023: Four things I learned
I purchased SmartMockup as part of the MightyDeals promotion in 2017 for $19. Back in 2017, I was looking for an affordable way to create realistic product mockups and SmartMockup seemed to be the perfect solution. The MightyDeals promotion gave me a great deal and allowed me to purchase the software at a fraction of the regular price.
The application is pretty old. It gives me errors every time I launch it. However, I still can use it. I don't know if that means the application is a legacy application and SmartMockup isn't planning to do any updates. Perhaps one of these days the application just won't work anymore.
A total of 1,694 mockups are available to choose from. Some of them are blank, which are the new "Pro" mockups. These mockups would be available to me if I had a pro account.
I like SmartMockup's designs and styles. I like that I can put together a mockup very quickly. It's nice that, after I've done a design, I can open it up in Pixelmator Pro and add some additional details.
We recently celebrated a birthday and we wanted a gluten-free cake. We chose Black Rose Bakery in Westborough, Massachusetts. THis is the same location that Gerardo's European Bakery was, which I blogged about back in 2016.
Long Rocheford, the head baker at Gerardo's European Bakery, took over the business in 2022, and the inside looks exactly as it did when it was Gerardo's European Bakery.
We were happy to see they still sell gluten-free cakes, and they do an amazing job with them. Long Rocheford has kept the same recipes and methods since he took over the bakery. He believes in using quality ingredients to make the best gluten-free cakes, and he is committed to offering a variety of products that meet the needs of all customers.
Four things we learned
It is a very busy place, and they only have limited parking. If the parking lot is full, it may be better to return in 15 minutes. If the parking lot is full, chances are that there is a long wait for entry inside.A
As I noticed, they still offer many of the same pastries as before. There are a few gluten-free options. Ask if you want gluten-free pastries. They are all spread out in a large display.A
We ordered the cake and had a mishap on the way home. Somehow the front of the cake got smooshed against the box. I brought the cake back to see if they could fix it. An hour later, the cake looked like new! Amazing. They didnaEUR(tm)t charge me anything to fix it. Great customer service.A
We went simple this year but the Black Rose added a nice touch to make the cake special. We had 11 people eat slices and there were still two slices left over. My daughter ate them later that day.A

The Ecobee WiFi disconnecting and turning off your smart thermostat is a frustrating issue that many people have experienced. Fortunately, there are some ways that you can help resolve the issue.
We Encountered this Issue!
While we were having a sleepover party this weekend, we arranged some furniture in the living room and accidentally blocked the WiFi router. This resulted in a weak signal from the router. This caused Ecobee thermostats to lose the WiFi connection - and turn off the heat. This happened because the router was unable to send a strong enough signal through the furniture, resulting in a weak signal that was not strong enough to maintain the connection with the Ecobee thermostats.
Some sleepover guests complained about being too cold at 2 a.m. We investigated the issue and discovered that the Ecobee was offline. We fixed the issue by connecting the Ecobee to another working hot spot. As soon as it was hooked up, the house started to warm up. The router was offline because it wasn't communicating with the Ecobee, which was the device responsible for controlling the temperature in the house. By connecting the Ecobee to another working hot spot, we were able to ensure that the device was communicating with the hot spot and was able to adjust the temperature in the house accordingly.
There's no explanation for why Ecobee turns off when the WiFi signal is lost. If the WiFi was down when we were on vacation, I couldn't imagine what we would do.
Some Technical Workarounds
First, make sure that your router's firmware is up-to-date. This will ensure that it has all the necessary security features and help prevent any potential connection issues in the future. Furthermore, if possible, try moving your router closer to your Ecobee thermostat. This will improve signal strength and reduce interference from nearby appliances and devices, such as microwaves or cordless phones.
You could also try changing some settings on both sides. On one end, set up a static IP address to improve connectivity; on the other, configure port forwarding rules for specific ports used by ecobee application (443 & 80). You should also check to see if a firewall is blocking access between these devices. Until further troubleshooting steps have been carried out, disable it temporarily. In addition, be sure that each device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network using the same name/password combination - otherwise, they won't recognize each other properly, resulting in eventual disconnections later down the line due to a lack of proper configuration during initial setup.
In conclusion, it's important to remember that regular maintenance of routers and modems should always take place aEUR" including the update of software whenever available aEUR" because these simple tasks often save us a lot of headaches dealing with various types internet-related issues, including those caused by our beloved Smart Thermostats like Ecobees. In the end, I hope the tips mentioned above helped to resolve the current problem of disconnecting from WiFi and turning it off.

iCloud took up too much space on my iMac, so I reduced its storage capacity. iCloud stores all of your photos, documents, and other files on the cloud, so they can be accessed from any device. However, if it takes up too much space on your device, it can slow down your computer and make it difficult to access other programs. The storage capacity can be reduced to free up more space on your device.
Cleanup Plan
My original plan was to use iCloud simply as a backup drive and store files I may not use often. However, I found that it is really more useful as a backup folder than as extra storage.A The files you store in iCloud are not deleted from your computer.
To free up space on my iCloud drive, I use an external SSD drive and copy files over to that drive and then delete them from the iCloud drive.
Backing up files in iCloud without downloading them to your computer is really difficult, especially if you don't have a lot of space on your computer.
As I was backing up the files, I didn't want to lose the creation date, so I couldn't use the browser or anything like that to download the files. Applications like Path Finder and Transmit didn't really work well to move files.
Clean out Media First
In these processes, my first step was to search for all the movies as they take up the majority of space. Once those were all located, I sorted through zip files and disk images to remove them. This allowed me to free up a significant amount of storage space on my computer and made it easier to find the files I was looking for. It also helped me to identify which files were no longer needed and could be discarded.
As I cleaned out my iCloud drive, I also reorganized my data. My problem was that I did not have a logical method of storing files - I would organize certain files by the date I created them. This made it difficult to find files similar to Affinity Designer templates and fonts. Now I have files stored in an easy-to-find manner.
SSD Drive
SSD drives are a really smart solution. This is because now I can use that device between two computers and not have to worry about it using space on my main computer. I think of it as my mini-icloud. SSD drives are much smaller and lighter than traditional hard drives, making them easier to transport. They are also much faster and more reliable, so you don't have to worry about data loss. Plus, they use less power and generate less heat, making them more energy efficient.
Conclusion
My iCloud Drive is still home to a few things, but about 60% of its storage space has been reduced.
If you have Apple iCloud, perhaps your most effective strategy is not to use it all that much. Instead, consider backing up some of your critical or frequently used files to an external hard drive. For instance, it's not necessary for me to have access to Christmas and Halloween files in the spring.A
In December, we visited Erica's Ristorante in Ashland, Massachusetts. We have visited here before and knew that they had some Gluten Free options for my daughter. We wanted to make sure that my daughter had a safe and enjoyable dining experience. We knew that Erica's was likely to have some options that she would be able to enjoy without the worry of getting sick.
I informed the server about my daughter's gluten-free allergy, and the waiter was able to determine whether or not anything we wanted to order could be prepared gluten-free according to her allergy. The server was knowledgeable about the ingredients in each dish. She was able to tell us which ones were safe for my daughter to eat, based on her dietary restrictions. This made it much easier for us to make informed decisions about what to order.

Furthermore, the server also had the capability of determining whether or not cross-contamination issues might have occurred. The server was able to accurately tell us if a dish was gluten-free and if there was any chance of cross-contamination from other ingredients.
The pasta with meatballs that my daughter had was very enjoyable. She did not eat the whole thing but saved some for later. She ate the leftovers the next day. This is a testament to the quality of the food; it was so delicious that even the leftovers were enjoyable.
The experience we had at Erica's in Ashland, Massachusetts, was pleasant. We look forward to returning sometime in the future in order to try something new and different there. It was a positive experience from the service to the food. The atmosphere was inviting and the staff was friendly and attentive. We enjoyed the food we had and were impressed with the variety of dishes on offer.

Additionally, the batteries on the Go Pro are designed to last longer in cold weather, meaning that you will be able to get more footage with less charging.
