Nutro Cat Food Recall Experience
In mid May, we purchased a new kitten, which we named Sox. We needed food and supplies for the new kitten so we went to Petco in Framingham, Massachusetts. We were very excited about the kitten and were looking for good food for her. We feed our adult cat, Fenway, Fancy Feast and a mix of 2 Purina ONE dry foods and a Science Diet dry food.
In the store, we were met by a Nutro sales rep that went out of the way to explain all the advantages of Nutro Natural Choice dry cat food. She took us down a couple of isles comparing Nutro with other products, Petco and Science Diet. She took products off the shelves and compared the ingredients with Nutro. She went out of the way to explain all the benefits of Nutro products. She even had pictures of her cats that were using Nutro products.
Based on her advice, we purchased a couple of Nutra dry cat food bags, one for Sox and one for Fenway. We also got some wet Nutro kitten food for Sox. Just before we left the store, the Nutro lady wanted to give us coupons but stated she was getting them next weekend, so she took our names and said that she will have them the next time we come in.
When we got home, we opened up bag we got for Fenway and mixed it with his other cat food. We then put Sox's food in a container to keep it fresh. We put the food in air tight containers because its a great way to keep the cat food fresh.
On May 21st, 2009 Nutro Products announced a voluntary recall of select varieties of NUTRO- NATURAL CHOICE- COMPLETE CARE- Dry Cat Foods and NUTRO- MAX- Cat Dry Foods. According to the press release:
Consumers who have purchased affected product should immediately discontinue feeding the product to their cats, and switch to another product with a balanced nutritional profile... Consumers who have purchased product affected by this voluntary recall should return it to their retailer for a full refund or exchange for another NUTRO- dry cat food product. Cat owners who have more questions about the recall should call 1-800-833-5330 between the hours 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM CST.
The problem is that we don't have the bags anymore since we threw them away when we put the cat food in the containers. This evening, out of caution, we decided to replace all the dry cat food with new food. We purchased about $60 worth of dry cat food and threw out all the other food.
We are very disapointed with all the food that we had to throw away this evening. While we were at Petco, we told the guy at the store about the Nutro lady and he said, "Ya, that lady is a little crazy." Given our experience with Nutro Products, I think it will be a long time before we buy any of their food again.
