Boston Places to See

There's lots of good places to checkout in Boston, Massachusetts, here are five little known places to check out:

Swan Boat on the Boston Garden
Take a nice relaxing ride on the Swan Boats in the Boston Garden. There really isn't much to see on your short tour, but it's a nice relaxing way to spend the afternoon. A fun thing to do is see if you can find the hidden swan boat symbol someplace around the swan boat pond. Hint: Try looking up.

Boston Stone
On Marshall Street near Fanuel Hall Marketplace is where you'll find the historic Boston Stone. This stone used to mark the center of Boston. There's nothing to do but take pitures with you and the Stone and walk on historic Marshall Street which is a cobblestone street.

Mysterious Grave in the Boston Commons
In the Boston Commons, near Tremont Street and Boylston Street, lies an old graveyard. William Billings is buried someplace in the graveyard. There is a sign just outside of the gate letting you know about the mysterious grave.

Museum of Science
The Boston Museum of Science is a great place to spend a day, but there are two exhibits you may not know about. On the third floor there is a library filled with all sort of science books, and a live bees nest. Yes, a live Bees nest! Just inside of the library is where you can see and hear the bees. Bonus: Ask the librarian about the Owl display. That's a secret display on the fourth floor. You can only get there if you are a Museum of Science worker. If you ask nicely someone may show you the display.

Boston Marathon Finish Line
Right in front of the Main Entrance of the Boston Public Library on Boylston street is the finish line of the Boston Marathon. You can see the Finish line almost any time of the year.

Asian Longhorned Beetle Report

If you have seen the Asian Longhorned Beetle in Massachusetts, you should report it to the authorizes and let them know about it!

There's quite a few look-a-likes, use the reporting page to determine if it's the correct beetle. Also useful are some of the tree markings.

Speed Traps in Waltham and Lincoln

I just notice some new speed traps that seem to be generating some revenue, a couple of cars were caught.

  • In Waltham, on Spring Street near the Concord Ave intersection.
  • In Lincoln, on Trapelo Road near Minebrook Road. (Just before the Lincoln Public Library.)

Also it looks like another speed trap will be coming soon to Lincoln Road in Lincoln, Ma near the Old Town Hall. There's a speed monitor tracking cars heading north bound.

Boston Commercial Real Estate

It wasn't that long ago where the Commercial Real Estate in the Boston area was the place to be. This snip from the Boston Business Journal shows how things have changed:

There is approximately 3,709,000 square feet of sublease space in the suburban market, and about 57 percent of it is considered Class A property. Of the available sublease space, 39 percent is in the Route 128 West submarket.

Along 128 in Waltham, construction is almost completed in several large office complexes. Between Trapelo Road and Route 117 commuters will see construction just about completed on three new office buildings. With the recession just about to end, it will be interesting to see how these new building fair out.

One thing that may worry those that drive by these buildings everyday, what will this mean for my commute? How many new cars will I have to deal with?

LG vx8360 Charger

If you have a LG vx8360 phone, you don't need to spend a lot of money on a charger. The phone can be charged via USB cable with a Micro connection.

I just got a USB2 cable from eforcity.com for $5. Much cheaper than $15 that it would cost to get a cable at the Verizon store. I simple plug the USB2 end to an open USB2 slot on my computer and the other end to the phone. Works great!

I only mention this because on eforcity they have a disclaimer that says that the cable may not charge all phones. It works fine on the LG VX8360 phone!

Ted Kennedy Passing

Today is the first day since November 7, 1962 that Massachusetts will be without Edward M. Kennedy as a United States senator. He would have served sooner except that he didn't meet the age qualification set by the US Constitution.

Obviously there's a lot of coverage in the Boston media about Ted Kennedy passing and what his legacy means. He was a valuable Senator and has done a lot of good for the state of Massachusetts.

Fall Colors

If your in New England right now, take a look around. See anything strange? No? Well look at the top of some of the oak trees. Yup some of the trees have started to change colors!

Yes, the fall foliage season transformation has started! Some of the top of trees have started changing colors. This happens every year, so its not so unusual. However, it is weird to see some of the color changes in the middle of a heat wave.

Check out some of the fall colors that I have taken in the past in the Photo Gallery. There's some great colors! If your building a fall website and looking for Fall Color Palette to use, check out the chart.

The best time to be in New England to enjoy the fall colors is about a month from now. Start planning your travel plans now, don't wait til it too late!

Mass.gov Statisics

You can find out the 2007 website statistics for the Mass.gov website at the following URL:

http://www.mass.gov/Aitd/docs/WebMetrics/2007_03/office_of_the_state_auditor/GENERAL.html

From the Website:

The General Summary provides a quick overview of the general statistics for the entire web site during the report time frame. The most useful numbers are the 'Successful requests for pages' which represents pages viewed by users and 'Distinct Hosts Served' which is an approximation of the number of visitors.

I guess having Google index your entire website is not a good idea. Someone needs to teach the IT staff about using robot.txt file so some areas of the website are not accessible.

U-Haul Re-Use Center

This is a great idea by U-Haul which was announced yesterday:

U-Haul said Wednesday it is opening a re-use center in Somerville, Mass., for customers looking to ditch unwanted items before a move.

The facility on Mystic Valley Parkway will take in gently used household goods, furniture, sporting equipment, bikes and clothing that were formerly destined for the dump. Items placed in the area are available for customers, U-Haul employees, and outsiders to pick up at no cost. It will also have designated drop-off boxes for clothing and other donations to the Salvation Army and Goodwill.
