Homemade Popcorn Like the Movies
I found this interesting tidbit on how to make excellent popcorn. Obviously, this is a gluten-free recipe.
Thirty-odd years ago, I worked in a movie theater that was voted as having the best popcorn in our city. I made quite a bit of that popcorn. We had two simple tricks to great crunchy popcorn. The first was to use double the oil. The second was to let it dry out overnight and reheat it the next day. Busy weekends always drove down the quality as it never had the chance to dry out completely. At the concession stand, we were always asked how fresh the popcorn was. "Made it half an hour ago," was the standard response.
This might be fun to try on a Friday night for a Saturday night movie. I'll have to make sure to make plenty because I don't want to run out if its a hit.

Tavern on the Square
There is a new restaurant at Shoppers World Framingham, Tavern on the Square, which has opened in the previously occupied area by John Harvard's. The restaurant offers a variety of dishes, including burgers, sandwiches, salads, and more. It also has an extensive bar menu with craft beer and cocktails. The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, making it a great spot for a relaxed dinner or lunch.
John Harvard in 2019 and Tavern on the Square in 2023. (Same Location)
Situated in the heart of Framingham, the new Tavern on the Square location boasts a spacious and inviting ambiance. The restaurant's elegant decor, cozy seating arrangements, and warm lighting create a welcoming setting for guests to relax and enjoy their dining experience. Whether you're visiting for a casual lunch with friends or a romantic dinner for two, Tavern on the Square provides the perfect backdrop for any occasion.
Five things we learned
- We used to have to drive a considerable distance to other locations, so we are happy this restaurant is so close. The convenience of this new restaurant has been a great blessing to us. We really like the way they have changed the place from John Harvard. It is much more spacious and brighter than before.
- Appetizer Choice: Chicken wings are my daughter's favorite appetizer. She hasn't found a restaurant that offers gluten-free wings. Her all time favorite was Durgin Park.
- The restaurant manager came to our table to deliver the gluten free wings. He informed us that 79% of the menu items could be made gluten free, and that the servers are well-trained on what items can be made gluten free.
- Dinner Choice: Fish and Chips. It is one of the few places in New England that sells Gluten Free Fish and Chips. My daughter says they are good and crispy. She waited all day for the meal and wasn't disappointed.
- Desert Choice: My daughter ordered the Flourless Chocolate Cake. She said it was delicious. Her only complaint was the portion size was small.

We'll be Back!
It was a pleasure eating at The Tavern on the Square. We are looking forward to going back! Right now the restaurant is really busy - as other people are excited about the new location. You can make reservations online - just make them far in advance. The wait can be more than an hour during business hours.
It will be nice to have another local restaurant for my daughter to visit. She is looking forward to trying out other dishes on future visits. I think she will love the Tavern Burger with Tator Tots!
When it comes to finding gluten free options while dining out, it can sometimes be a challenge. However, our recent experience at the Keltic Kitchen in West Yarmouth, Massachusetts proved to be a pleasant surprise. One dish that truly stood out was their gluten free French toast. The texture and flavor were on par with its gluten-filled counterpart, leaving us fully satisfied. The Keltic Kitchen's attention to detail and commitment to providing delicious gluten free options really shone through in this dish.
Aside from the gluten free french toast, the menu at the Keltic Kitchen offered a wide range of other gluten free options as well. A trip to the movies has evolved beyond popcorn and soda, as theaters now offer a diverse range of dining options that enhance the cinematic experience. Recently, my family and I embarked on a culinary adventure at Studio 3, located within the Showcase Cinema de Lux in Foxborough. Our evening, while enjoyable overall, was not without its share of quirks and surprises.
Showcase Cinema de Lux in Foxborough offers dining in the theaters but you have to be over 21. So we decided to check out Studio 3 which is located in the lobby of Showcase Cinema de Lux in Foxborough.
A Gluten-Free Gamble
Upon entering Studio 3, we were greeted by the stylish ambiance and a sense of excitement. The concept of enjoying a delicious meal before watching a movie was appealing. However, as someone with dietary restrictions, she was keen to explore gluten-free options. Unfortunately, it quickly became evident that not all staff members were well-versed in the intricacies of the menu.
When inquiring about gluten-free options, we encountered a slight hurdle as the person behind the bar seemed unsure about which foods were safe for those with gluten sensitivities. This lack of awareness was a bit disappointing, but we decided to proceed with caution and make our selections based on what we knew to be gluten-free.
We wanted a Burger with no bun - a generally safe bet when eating out.
Studio 3 Menu - there isn't really any good options.
The Missing Burger
To our surprise, the initial excitement was dampened when we were informed that burgers were not available that day. This unforeseen twist left my daughter a bit disheartened, as she had been eagerly anticipating this particular dish. The absence of a seemingly simple option like a burger underscored the unpredictability of dining experiences.
Decision to Wait
When my daughter realized the desired burger was not available, she decided to postpone her culinary quest until we got into the movie theater. The idea of pairing a great movie with a snack was appealing to her, and she explored the concessions stand within the cinema. She rather has some popcorn with her Barbie movie.
Our experience at Studio 3 within Showcase Cinema de Lux in Foxborough was a blend of excitement and minor letdowns. While the concept of dining before watching a movie remains novel and entertaining, certain aspects left us wanting more. The lack of gluten-free awareness among staff members was disappointing and highlighted the importance of accommodating dietary needs in modern dining establishments.

As we stepped into this gastronomic haven, we knew we were in for a treat.
Many Ocean Edge golfers know this spot as the go-to place for a beer after a round of golf - but their food is also great!
The Gluten-Free Hamburger: A Culinary Masterpiece
The anticipation was palpable as we placed our order for the Gluten-Free hamburger, eager to experience the flavors that awaited us. Our expectations were exceeded as the burger arrived at our table, adorned with a fluffy gluten-free bun. The Linx Tavern had seamlessly combined culinary artistry with dietary restrictions, resulting in a burger that was both visually appealing and incredibly appetizing.
Delicious to the Last Bite
With each bite, the Gluten-Free hamburger at the Linx Tavern proved to be a symphony of flavors. The patty, crafted with the finest ingredients, was succulent and perfectly seasoned, while the gluten-free bun upheld its integrity, providing a satisfying texture. The accompaniments of fresh lettuce, ripe tomatoes, and tangy pickles enhanced the overall experience, creating a harmonious blend of flavors that danced on our palates.
As you can see from the after picture, my daughter enjoyed her "The Local" burger. She told me before we went that she was looking forward to it. We'll definitely be going back on our next Cape Cod Trip.

There is a breakfast and lunch restaurant in Hyannis, Massachusetts called the Daily Paper. On a recent trip to Cape Cod, we visited this restaurant for breakfast as part of our vacation. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and the atmosphere of the restaurant. We would definitely recommend the Daily Paper to anyone visiting Cape Cod.
https://dailypapercapecod.com/ - Gluten Free Waffles and Homefries
Five Things We Learned
The Daily Paper has two locations, one in downtown Hyannis and the other near the Barnstable High School. The one near the Barnstable High School is much larger and a better location if you are visiting during busy breakfast hours. You are likely to wait in a smaller line than downtown.
Even though there was no gluten-free menu on the table, the waitress told us that they could make nearly everything on the menu gluten-free, including gluten-free pancakes and fresh berries gluten-free waffles. My daughter was thrilled to know that she would be able to eat waffles at the restaurant. She also ordered a side of home fries.
I ordered the daily Corned Beef hash special with 2 eggs and home fries. This is different from the regular Corned Beef on the menu as that one comes from a can. This version is homemade hash.
As for the waffle order, it took a very long time to prepare. Everyone got their orders, but we were still waiting for our waffles. The waitress informed us that it would take a bit longer to prepare the gluten free waffles, I estimated that my daughter had to wait two minutes for her order. My daughter was eating the home fries while she was waiting.
The waffles were good she did eat a good size portion. She liked it and definitely would go back and order it again - despite the long wait to get the order.
It was a good meal at the restaurant, but one dish didn't turn out well since the potch eggs were cooked too much and were difficult to spread over the fries, as a result, they were not as good as we might have liked.
I think overall we would go back on our next Cape Cod vacation. It was a nice that our daughter could get gluten free waffles in a restaurant.
